Location of the Zeppelin Observatory

Zeppelin1.jpgThe Zeppelin Observatory is located at Ny-Ålesund (78º54’ N, 11º53’ E) on the Norwegian Arctic archipelago og Svalbard, just under the top of Zeppelin Mountain (474 m a.s.l.).

Since 1989, the mountain station has been a cornerstone of NILU’s monitoring activities of pollution in the Arctic and its relation to the remote sources, continuing the activities from "down-town" Ny-Ålesund, which started in the late 1970s.

The first facility just below the top of Mount Zeppelin near Ny-Ålesund was officially opened in 1990. However, due to the continuously growing monitoring programme with increasingly demanding requirements on local emissions, e.g., from building material, it was decided to rebuild the station in the late 1990s. The new more modern building was opened by HRH Crown Prince Haakon Magnus on 2 May, 2000.

A web camera is mounted at the Zeppelin Observatory, giving an hourly updated view of Ny-Ålesund and the Kongsfjord area:
